Need some ideas for building custom roof rack

First of all, YES I searched. I cannot find much at all on building custom roof racks. I know I have come across a few write ups here and there when I wasn't looking, but now that I am looking I can't find shit. My plan is to build a simple roof rack to replace the factory POS.

Im planning on mounting to the side gutters instead of using the stock mounts. I will either buy some yakima clamps for the gutters or just fab some up. What I am looking for is some pics of anyones custom built roof rack, so I can get some ideas of what I want mine to look like, best way to build, etc. I'm not planning on putting much weight up there. mostly will be holding camping gear (tents, sleeping bags, etc) maybe a spare tire occasionally and a xmas tree once a year. Any help/opinions would be highly appretiated!

I did read it. it said nothing about roof racks. it also said that the newbie section is for bolt ons and shit like that. I dont think fabbing up a custom roof rack is something a newbie does, nor would it belong in a newbie section? now if I was asking which rack to buy, I could see it belonging in the newbie section, but a custom fabbed/welded homemade rack seems a little above the "newbie" status.

fuck off with your bad attitute.
your just a "web wheeler" anyway..

Yep just a web wheeler.

A roof rack in general is newbie it is not advance or technical. I copy and pasted. Making a roof rack is not major modification. I even highlighted and made larger the part for you that applies.

What belongs in this forum?

TECH.

Here are some examples: major modifications and up-grades not normally purchased as a kit, but that require individual ingenuity, innovation, and perseverance in design. Unibody reinforcement, larger axle swaps, fitting big tires, JeepSpeed builds, fabbing 3 and 4 link suspensions, custom fabricated parts, non factory option drivetrain swaps, and other advanced/fabrication type questions.

The common theme here is fabrication, advanced technical information and questions.

If you can't figure it out on your own then you belong in newbie. Yes I have a bad attitude alot of the time because newbie's like you clog up the "advanced" fab with stupid crap like this.

Now go away.

What doesn't belong in this forum?

What Cherokee to buy, what size tire fits with a 3" lift, bolt ons, drivability issues, parts identification, troubleshooting stock electrical issues, or questions about budget boost kits and countless other things...

Now that you know you can go ahead and move along to the correct section. If you cant come up with a decent design on your own or figure out how to search for pictures of various baskets then you definately dont belong in here.

Hadfield is right. This belongs in the non-hardcore section. That mission statement is meant to get a point across. This part of the forum is meant for hardcore innovative tech for the unibody Jeeps. Any vehicle can have a roof rack.

Now if your roof rack was structurally linked into your exo cage with secret flip up PIAA lights that you use for Jeep Speed at night in the desert.

Go out and get some 3/4" 14 gauge box tubing and go to town.

Got your quote before you edited. No offence taken.

Just because thats what it says under my name does not mean that is what I am.

YouTube - Matt Body shop reverse

I've wheeled with Scott a couple times at Crozet he may vouch for me. If not then I won't feed him next time he comes for the weekend with only a case of coke.

I'd be happy to put up my thread here just never have.

Not that I need to justify myself to this group of malcontents and castoffs.

hmm, says the common theme is fabrication, advanced tech, and questions.

im asking QUESTIONS about FABRICATION. it says that custom fabrication belongs in this section, which is what building a roof rack from scrap is. I didn't post it in an advanced fab section, I posted it under Brand Specific Tech > Jeep - Cherokee > because im asking about building it for specifically a cherokee.

im sure if this thread really dosent belong here a responsible mod will soon enough move it. Are you a mod? no, just a web wheeler accoring to the info to the left of every one of your posts.

Damn quoting. You should come up to RC with Scott some time. Always nice to meet people from Pirate.

Brandon_6667, Ashman (mod) will move this because it does not fit here. Just a hint, hang around and just watch some of the threads. Learn the site a bit more, because you will keep getting flamed. If you aren't sure if it is hardcore then save yourself some headache and put it in the non-hardcore.

Since you asked nicely and it now in newbie I'll say there are usually a bunch for sale. You'd be a lot better just picking up one used. Check your local boards and craigslist.

If you really want to build one so you can learn how to fab then pic up a welder and some manner to cut metal. Some plate steel and design your own to mount to store bought gutter mounts. Chances are you can't build gutter mounts better than you can buy.

If I had the cash I probably would just buy one, but it will only cost around $45 for all the material to make one and I already have a welder and have been doing some minor fabbing the past 2 years or so. I also have a nice milwakee chopsaw perfect for tubing so I think im set. gonna probably use some 3/4 box tubing like Xjcrawler736 mentioned earlier.

and after looking at some for sale on the internet I think I will be able to come up with a nice looking functional design, and i think I can make up some decent gutter mounts but will buy some if mine dont turn out good.

And I'll have to say that for a cranky prick hadfield4wd, your video is pretty cool, .

Have at it. Your first fab will generally turn out looking not like you think. It's just time and figureing out how you want to do it. Draw it out first. Also keep in mind the gutters are not straight.

I called my local hardware shop and it looks like the closest they have is
1" X 1" X .063 sq tubing

only 15bucks per 20ft stick. but would this be strong enough to use? also, all I have is .035 (i think) flux core mig wire, would this be too thin to welt without a smaller wire and gas?

Dont you have a local STEEL supplier??? Thats where you need to go.

1x1 is a touch bulky size wise and welding it up with .035 flux you'll likely blow holes but if your good enough you could do it.

yeah, its reliable hardware and steel. only steel supplier i know of around here. So you think I should go with a 3/4"x3/4" instead of 1"x1" ??
